Question by ajschumacher4: I had to write “The Raven” in my own words?

Once upon a late night while I thought
I read an old book that’d been forgotten
When I almost fell asleep suddenly I heard a knocking
As if someone was knocking on my chamber door
“Must be a visitor” I said “Knocking on my chamber door”
And nothing more.

It was during a cold December, I remember
And the dying fire in my chamber cast shadows
I was waiting for tomorrow
Then I thought of my lost Lenore
She is dead and with the angels
Unspoken for evermore.

The rustling of the curtains saddened me
Yet it thrilled me and gave me terrors never felt before
To calm myself I kept repeating
“It is somebody wanting to enter my chamber”
Some late night visitor requesting entrance to my chamber door”
This is it, and nothing more.

My soul grew stronger and I would wait no longer
“Sir” I said “or Ma’am, please forgive me
But I was napping and then you came tapping
And so quietly you came tapping on my chamber door
And I’m sure I heard you” I opened the door to find darkness
Darkness there and nothing more.

As I stood there staring into the darkness I wondered and feared
I doubted and dreamed dreams nobody had dreamed before
But all was silent so I kept dreaming
The only thing breaking the silence was me whispering “Lenore?”
After I whispered an echo returned my “Lenore?”
Merely this and nothing more.

I went back into the chamber with my soul burning
Soon I heard the tapping again, louder than before
“Of course it must be something at my window”
Let me go to my window so I may explore
Let my fear subside so I may explore this mystery
It’s the wind, and nothing more.

I flung open the window and suddenly
In flew a raven just like the days of old
He did not leave, and showed no respect
Just like a lord he was perched over my chamber door
He was perched on a bust of Pallas above my chamber door
Perched, and sat, and nothing more

The bird charmed my sadness into happiness
Because of the grave and serious look of the bird
“Though your feathers are cut, I’m sure no coward
Ghostly grin and an ancient raven wandering from nightly shore
Tell me, what’s your name in the underworld?
Said the raven “Nevermore”

I was surprised to hear the raven speak so plainly
Though its answer bore no sense
We cannot help but agree that no living being
Was ever blessed with seeing a bird above his chamber door
Bird or beast above the bust on their chamber door
With a name of “Nevermore”

But the raven only spoke one word
It is as if he poured all his soul into that one word
He said nothing else and did not more
Until I said “other friends have flown before”
“He will leave tomorrow, I hope as I have before”
Then the bird said “Nevermore”

I was startled at the silence broken
“Doubtless” I said “what it utters is the only word it can speak”
“Learned from an unhappy master whom disaster
Followed fast and followed faster until his songs
Until the funeral songs of his hope that melancholy bore
Of never- nevermore

But the raven still charmed me into smiling
I wheeled a chair in front of the bird, bust and door
Then upon taking a seat I thought
Thinking of what his sinister bird of yesterday
What this grim and bird of death of yesterday
Meant by saying “nevermore”

I sat thinking and guessing, but with no answer
To the bird whose gaze burned into my soul
I sat trying to figure out, with my head resting
On the cushions velvet lining that the lamplight shown on
But whose velvet lining that the lamplight shown on
Her head will rest on nevermore

Then the air grew thicker from the unseen incense
Swung my angels whose feet tinkled on the tuffled floor
“My god has lent me by the angels he has lent me
Rest and forget, from thy memories of Lenore
Drink this drug and forget Lenore”
Said the Raven “Nevermore”

“Prophet” I said “Thing of evil, bird or devil
Whether sent, or lost from thy shore
Alone yet unphased on this lonely land
On this haunted home tell me
Is there any cure for my deep depression, tell me, I implore!”
Said the raven “Nevermore”

“Prophet” I Said “thing of evil, Bird of devil
By the heaven above us and the god we both adore
Tell this soul stricken with grief, within the distant heaven
If it shall hold a sainted maiden of the name Lenore
Hold a rare and beautiful maiden whom the angels name Lenore”
Said the raven “Nevermore”

“Be that word the end of this, bird of fiend” I screamed, up starting
Get back into the tempest and your underworld!
Leave no feather as token of the lie you have spoken!
Just leave me alone, Leave the bust above the door!
Take your beak from out of my heart, and take yourself from off my door!
Said the raven “Nevermore”

And the raven, never leaving, still is sitting, still is seating
On the faded bust of Pallas just above my chamber door
And his eyes seem as of a demon who is dreaming
And the lamplight over him throws his shadow on the floor
And my soul from the shadow that lies on the floor
Sha
