yes you need to sand it.Buy a sander or just use your hand. The grit of paper will be determined by how bad the surface is.Start with a low number like 80 grit paper.Sand with the grain and take your time.Next re-sand it but upgrade your paper to something like 100 or 120 grit. That paper should be fine enough to give you a nice surface to apply your new stain….don’t forget to dust the swing off before staining…If you plan to varnish it when you’re done staining – remember – stir the varnish – DO NOT SHAKE.Shaking varnish causes air bubbles.

SPLINTERS IN YOUR BOTTOM, & VERY SMALL ONES SNAG CLOTHES – YES, SAND IT

The rough wood can still be stained, but the problem is that you may get splinters, etc from it when you use it, unless you sand it. Sanding smoothes the wood, helps eliminate high spots, helps remove any previous paint, varnish, etc. If the swing is for kids, then you should sand it.

You can sand it by hand by just wrapping a piece of sandpaper around a wood block, but if the piece is large, it will take some time to finish it. Or you can get an electric sander at any hardware store, home improvement store like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Menards, the tool section of Sears, Walmart, K-mart, and so on.

No it is not necessary, but I would highly recomend it cause it will give you a better finish. If you have already stained the seat then use a very fine sandpaper to smooth it down and then give nit a clear varnish. Then another even finner sanding to finish it off. I hope this helps

My suggestion would be to sand the whole thing. If you are wanting to put a stain on the swing to preserve the wood, and with stain being a little pricey, I would take a little more time to sand it down, with wood being porus material you would want the stain to soak through. I would reccomend a belt sander to cover larger areas of the swing, and then you will have to probably sand some by hand. Besides if the wood itself is rough the sander will make it smoother, after other material such as old paint is removed. Hope this helps.
